About the Journey
Sixteen chapters. One unforgettable voyage—from The Departure to The Calibration of the Soul—where every challenge becomes a lesson in resilience.
About the Book
The departure of young Harinath Patel from the tobacco cultivation family business, under circumstances had to take guardianship of an Englishmen to stay in UK at the age 15 years. Hari set sail on a ship S.S. Chusan in 1955. Harinath had never left the inner roads of his village Sunav in Gujarat. Harinath possessed characteristic of stoicism, he faced difficulties in speaking English and western etiquette’s. He was resilient to the insults and, indiscrimination he left the mark as of a unique passenger on the journey.
The long voyage from Bombay to Tilbury Port in London transformed into far more than a mere passage across oceans; it became Hari’s true academy of the western world. What began as an intimidating voyage aboard the grand ocean liner quickly unfolded into an immersive masterclass in language, poise and social grace. He claimed the shipboard swimming championship, earning the respect of his fellow passengers through shared laughter and deck side conversation they would stay with him forever. By the time he walked into immigration at Tilbury, Harinath carried himself with the poise and total confidence of a young English gentleman.
The priest Father Wallace enrolled Hari in English classes alongside his technical studies, but it was moving from the YMCA into the Coopers' home that shaped his future. The Coopers gave him family warmth, broader cultural exposure, and the initial push to fully throw himself into his true passion: auto mechanics.
Harinath's rise was unstoppable. Starting on the shop floor sweeping grease at Paterson Auto Care in London, his sharp eye for engineering quickly earned the British owner's respect. The two soon joined forces as full partners, transforming a space in Park Royal into London's most sought-after garage for classic car reconditioning-a testament to Harinath's skill and uncompromising standards.
Now of marriageable age, Harinath stood out not only as a master of car reconditioning, but as an eloquent and deeply genuine man. It was this magnetic authenticity that drew the attention of Greta Hawthorne, a journalist and daughter of a British lord, sparking a long courtship. Their bond was forged against the harsh realities of the Windrush era in 1960s London. As systemic discrimination in housing, employment, and social life weighed heavily on the Indian diaspora, Harinath and Greta united with a shared purpose. Immersing themselves in years of quiet service, they fought to restore dignity to the immigrant community—armed with an unshakeable, stoic resilience that ultimately prevailed
